Description |
The following description is found on the yellow tag attached to the sword in the picture. It was written in Edwin Kirk Dillingham's hand, transcribed by Randon Paul Dillingham, and sent to the Waterbury Historical Society by Charles Dillingham, grandson of Edwin K. Dillingham. The tag reads: "Major Edwin Dillingham - This sword belonged to my Uncle Edwin Dillingham my father's brother, the second son of Paul Dillingham and Julia Carpenter Dillingham. It was a dress sword and so as far as I know was never worn in battle. I have another sword that he was warring (sic) when he was killed of (sic) the Battle of Opegion or (Winchester), September 19, 1864. In the summer of 1842 he enlisted and raised a company of the 10th Vermont Volunteers. He was staff officer general (illegible-ot) the battle of Opegion. He was captured and was in Libby Prison for 4 months. He was exchanged and after a short period of recuperation returned to active duty with his regiment. Meantime he had drew promotion to Major. I was named after him. Major Dillingham was born May 13, 1839. He was killed September 19, 1864." Further notes from Randon Paul Dillingham include: "The sword has nice bass hilt and engraving on the blade. It includes (US) about 10 inches from the hilt on right edge of the blade. It is somewhat rusty over all." |
