The following description is found on the yellow tag attached to the sword in the picture. It was written in Edwin Kirk Dillingham's hand, transcribed by Randon Paul Dillingham, and sent to the Waterbury Historical Society by Charles Dillingham, grandson of Edwin K. Dillingham. The tag reads: "This sword belonged to my Uncle Edwin Dillingham. He was born in Waterbury, Vermont on May 14, 1839. One September 19, 1864, he was struck by a cannon ball. He was Major of the 10 Volunteer Regiment of Vermont at the time and was warring the sword. The hilt was broken by the shot. He was my father's brother, the second son of Paul and Julia Carpenter Dillingham. I was named after him." -E.K. Dillingham, January 24, 1948 |
